Atopy school

Due to the epidemiological situation, in accordance with the strategy of prevention of possible spread of the COVID-19 virus, the educational program School of Atopy is postponed until further notice.

Atopy school is an interdisciplinary educational program designed for parents of children suffering from atopic dermatitis, food allergies and other atopic diseases as allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis. This training has a purpose to explain causes and pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, aggravating factors and to give instructions for proper implementation of therapy.

In addition, assessment of possible association between atopic dermatitis and nutritional allergy is essential because it is necessary to do an elimination diet of specific food, which is often issue among the parents because of possible deficit of important nutrients that presumably comes with elimination diet.

First “Atopy school” was organized in 2004 in Germany and its influence on improving the control of the disease is widely documented. In France, professor Stalder first started Atopy school in Nantes in 2006. and in 2007. in Italy, prof. Carlo Gelmetti, thus creating a network of atopy school in Europe.

In Croatia, first school of atopy was organised by dermatologyst Lena Kotrulja, MD, PhD, in 2011 In Clinical Hospital Centre “Sestre Milosrdnice “  in Zagreb, Dept. of Dermatology and venereology.  Until today this educational program was attended by more than 1000 parents which contributed to a higher level of awareness and improved standards of care for children with this chronic relapsing skin disease.

The training includes lectures of etiology, treatment, proper skin care and also factors which can lead to a worsening of the condition. Interactive workshop is also organized to give instructions for proper application of therapy and skin care (topical corticosteroids and immunomodulators as well as  ‘wet wrapps’) in case of inflammation of the skin. Workshop also includes counseling on adequate nutrition, with special emphasis on infancy in terms of primary and secondary prevention of atopic dermatitis and other atopic diseases.
